What Are The Benefits Of Air Purifiers For Baby Rooms?

If you look at the air in your home by looking at a sun ray, you will see all manner of small particles floating around in the air. For instance, if you have a dog, there is probably pet dander floating there. If you have carpet, you’ll likely have dust mites in the mix. You’re not necessarily a bad housekeeper. But now you have a baby’s health to consider in addition to your own.

You may have a central HVAC. It has a filter, but it doesn’t filter out much of the impurities in the air. The Environmental Protection Agency confirms that a central HVAC is not sufficient enough to effectively clean the air in your home.

The good news is that a good air purifier will catch almost all the remaining impurities in the air. Babies and others who are most affected by airborne pollutants need clean air to help them stay healthy. And it is important to choose the best air purifier for baby rooms.

An added benefit of air purifiers is the white noise that they may produce.  Air purifiers usually aren’t that noisy. In fact, some of are nearly impossible to hear. But white noise helps babies go to sleep, according to Dr. Harvey Karp, who wrote “The Happiest Baby on the Block.” He says that babies enjoy a “strong rhythmic noise” because their mother’s womb was loud and rhythmic. Healthline agrees that the white noise can be beneficial for babies.

Babies do have their preferences, he said, as to what white noise they prefer. It may be a fan, an air purifier set on high, the clacking of a computer keyboard, sounds of nature or music. You will find what works best for your little one, but an air purifier would very likely soon become a familiar soothing, constant sound to your baby. So, don’t be afraid if the air purifier you get purrs a little.

How To Choose The Best Air Purifier For Baby Rooms

You might want to think twice about purchasing an air purifier that has an ionizer or ozone-producing feature. The Environmental Protection Agency (See the precautions section below) warns consumers against using them.

You want to make sure that the purifier you purchase is appropriate for the size of your nursery (not all nurseries are small).

Of course, you will consider which among the many features are important to you. Also, it is important to read what other customers have to say about the purifier.

Features That Differentiate Air Purifiers For Baby Rooms

What are the features and the bells and whistles that make air purifiers different from each other? We came up with the following:

  • Purifying area
  • Ionizer or ozone-generating
  • What exactly it eliminates
  • Air pollution sensor
  • Air quality display
  • Number and types of filters, how long they last, availability of replacements
  • Filter sensors and displays
  • Timer
  • Number of fan speeds, manual or auto speed setting options
  • Auto shut-off if no pollution
  • Quiet motor
  • Warranty
  • Blow direction
  • Airflow strength
  • Reputation, complaints

Precautions For Using Air Purifiers For Baby Rooms

Especially for the baby room, it’s a smart idea to stay away from ozone-generating or ionizing air purifiers because they could be dangerous, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. You can find out all you would ever want to know on that subject here.

In a nutshell, these units are dangerous because the negatively charged ions they create emit ozone, and ozone irritates the lungs. Even though ozone-producing and ionizing air purifiers are controversial, we did include a multi-award-winning ionizing air purifier in our line-up because it has a shut-off switch for the ionizer feature.

The Air Control Guy Winner: Pure Enrichment PureZone Air Purifier

The Pure Enrichment takes first place. Other than perhaps having a comparatively weak fan, it seems to work and it brings few complaints.

I loved, loved, loved the fancy Coway purifier, but the ionizer feature seems to be on even when turned off, according to some customers. So, you many not want to chance that with babies.

The LEVOIT Air Purifier LV-H132 is great too. However, the Dyson and the Alen BreatheSmart both had some issues, so they remain at the bottom of my list even though they are generally trusted brands.

I’ve written some other general tips on shopping for air purifiers, which you can find here.
